3 Sun Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving ideas, thanksgiving activities, 3 sun thanksgiving

3 Sun Thanksgiving is a historical restoration project of LetsPlayHistory.org, and America’s first cultural exchange for Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Day.   The 3 Sun mission is to introduce Americans to living history as a year-round “holiday” hobby, and to heighten our cultural awareness of the relationship between mainstream America and Native America.  Through forums, blogging, outreach activities, and edutainment, 3 Sun looks to facilitate opportunities to create a greater sense of unity by expressing brotherly kindness across cultural divides.

Note:  Symbolism of the 3 Sun Logo

The “three suns” represent the three days of picnicking that the 1621 Plimoth “thanks-giving” ended up being.  The fact that the event lasted three days is actually testament to the English willingness to show themselves friendly by including unplanned Native culture in the celebration.  According to one primary source document, the English had originally intended only one day of thanks-giving.  In addition to the three sun symbolism, 3 Sun also recognizes the deer, not the turkey, as the culinary highlight of the 1621 event.  Deer venison is the only food mentioned in primary source documents as having specifically been on the menu during the event.  As the five deer brought to the feast by the Wampanoag allies were sacred offerings of kindness and peace to the English, the deer has a much more meaningful symbolism in our remembrances.  It is not necessary to eat deer for Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Day, but it is good to remember the spirit behind their having been provided as sacred, or holy (unusually valuable) gifts to the English.

LetsPlayHistory.org

LetsPlayHistory.org (LPH) is a history edutainment and social networking hub for Americans.  Our mission is to make history a matter of pastime fun for American families and communities.  LetsPlayHistory.org works to compile lists of period source documents, create and collect the best in living history how-to instructions, and help American educators, families, and enthusiasts of all things historical, to organize their own history-based activities and events.  Someday LetsPlayHistory.org hopes to be credited with having helped move history education out of the stereotype of boring, and into acceptance as a rewarding hobby.   (Currently, 3 Sun Thanksgiving is LPH’s primary focus, with the plan being to “earn” a support staff for expansion of LPH.)

Project Blog

In order to make the 3 Sun Thanksgiving project a living, breathing, community affair, we will be blogging about the project as it unfolds on the LetsPlayHistory.org blog.  We will write about the interesting twists and turns, ups and downs, and personal stories as Americans come together to honor Native Peoples, and reacquaint themselves with our true early Plymouth history.
